Songs of Faith and Devotion ako prvý hudobný internetový únik?

Ako sa uvádza v knihe "Appetite for Self-Destruction" Stevea Knoppera z roku 2009, k prvým únikom hudby v digitálnej podobe došlo oveľa skôr, ako vznikol akýkoľvek softvér pre zdieľanie obsahu (tzv. peer-to-peer), a predstavovali iba koncepčnú hrozbu pre nahrávací priemysel. Ako konkrétny príklad uvádza únik Songs of Faith and Devotion.

Kniha opisuje príbeh:

"Koncom roku 1993 vtrhla v panike sekretárka do kancelárie viceprezidenta Warner Bros. Jeffa Golda, aby mu oznámila naliehavú správu: Nové CD Songs of Faith and Devotion od Depeche Mode práve uniklo medzi fanúšikov v online chatovacích miestnostiach!"

Je nutné pripomenúť, že nahrávka sa nešírila v podobe mp3 súborov, pretože v roku 1993 ešte neexistovala kompresia mp3, ale boli to súbory s komprimáciou typu MPEG-2 (niečo ako dnešné bezstratové .wav), ktorých sťahovanie cez telefonické internetové pripojenie v tom čase trvalo asi pol hodiny. Fanúšikovia chceli naozaj počuť nový album Depeche Mode a pravdepodobne im prišlo okúzľujúce, že sa k nemu môžu dostať cez internet.

Once executives figured out how to use AOL and Netscape, their days of tinkering in label labs, trying to add new functions to shiny pieces of plastic, were over. In late 1993, a panicked secretary strode into Warner vice president Jeff Gold’s office to deliver an urgent message: Depeche Mode’s new Songs of Faith and Devotion CD had just leaked to fans in online chat rooms! “Oh no!” Gold declared to himself in a panic, picking up the phone, preparing to implement all kinds of high-tech emergency response plans. Then he paused: “Chat rooms?” He opened a CompuServe account to check them out, and it wasn’t long before he became addicted. Gold called his friend Marc Geiger, who had founded the Lollapalooza rock festival and was then head of new media for Rick Rubin’s American Recordings. The two met regularly at Geiger’s house in Los Angeles and lurked on fans’ online conversations. Then they went back to work and made some calls. Working with CompuServe and AOL, Gold and Geiger ran Thursday-night talk shows, with Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, among others, and posted exclusive sound clips and contests. At one point, Gold showed Mo Ostin, Warner’s respected old-school record man, what he and Geiger were up to after hours. “Fantastic,” Ostin said dryly, “but don’t forget your real job.”
